Lesson learned: Roosters focus inward

03 Sep, 2010 01:00 AM
SOUTH Warrnambool playing-coach Leah Kermeen has scaled back the Roosters' preparation for Sunday's first semi-final against Koroit after conceding the group had gone overboard last week.

Kermeen said the indulgence in video footage and position predictions had almost cost her side the match against Cobden.

"It was mentally exhausting," she said.

"There was a lot of nervous energy and a lot of expectation.

"We felt like we'd played the game before it happened."

After holding off the determined Bombers by five goals in the elimination final, South has returned to its familiar weekly routine.

"We've tried to revert back to what we're used to," Kermeen said.

"We've focused on our individual game, not so much them. It's just about that mental toughness."

The last time the Roosters and Saints met was in July, with South prevailing by five goals.

However, both sides were without key players due to a clash with the Warrnambool Mermaids' fixture.

This weekend the red and white uniform will welcome the service of Holly Greene, while the Saints will be bolstered by Louise McLean, Carly Pulling and Maddy White. Goal defence Greene and goal attack McLean are likely to line up against each other.

"Thankfully basketball is over," Kermeen said.

"This week is the first time we've had all eight players together at training for a month."

Kermeen will be put to the test by Saints defender Stacey O'Sullivan, while South midcourter Meleita Finnigan could battle Kate Dobson in the centre.

"The match shows a lot of key match-ups," Kermeen said.

"Koroit is a very experienced side, especially in finals, and they won't give up until the final whistle."

The do-or-die match starts at 1pm Sunday at Friendly Societies' Park .
