Hamilton lives up to top ranking

05 Mar, 2010 04:00 AM
HAMILTON was number one before last night's Western Regional State League clash with Hampden league but coach Jody Roth told her girls to forget it.

"I said that to be number one we needed to beat Hampden," she said.

"Now that we've beaten them, I'm going to go tell them 'now we're number one'."

Hamilton trounced Hampden 58-24, a result which virtually guarantees it the 17 and under minor premiership.

Roth explained the ladder leader position was her side's aim as the first round of finals pits the top-ranked side against the fourth-placed side.

She believed her girls were improving every week.

"Each game they've gone from strength to strength," she said. "They haven't flat lined."

Hampden, which was ranked second ahead of last night's encounter, was no match for the side in blue, which is made up of five Hamilton and five Portland girls.

"We got off to a really good start," said Roth, referring to the nine-goal lead her side built by half-time.

"They did everything that I asked of them."

Sisters Ebony and Stacey Rolph proved a formidable combination in defence, continually coming up with deflections and showing good anticipation to send the ball to Hamilton's attacking end.

The ladder leader's pressure wasn't just evident in the defensive third but all the way down the court.

The Bottle Greens' passes were particularly poor down their attacking end in the third term, effectively contributing to a 23-goal difference at the last break.

Hampden's passes were sharper in the final quarter as it came out with more intensity but Hamilton was able to match its rival with a 16-goal term.

When accurate shooter Jess Crow wasn't cleverly creating space for herself, she was effectively feeding goal partner Anastasia Hamill.

Hampden goal keeper Indi Morrison read the ball well in the last period, coming up with three intercepts.

Hamilton's pressure didn't die down, highlighted with two minutes left on the clock when it forced the Bottlegreens to make six successive passes in the centre third before they were called for held ball.

Roth wanted 14 goals from her side in the last quarter and it delivered 16.
