Dobson tips a classic qualifying final

28 Aug, 2010 05:00 AM
YOU don’t need a crystal ball to predict how today’s qualifying final between Koroit and Warrnambool will play out.

Saints playing coach Kate Dobson expects a classic encounter between last year’s grand finalists.

The sides have been separated by three, one and seven goals this season, with Koroit holding a 2-1 advantage over the Blues.

“(The margins) are nothing,” Dobson said.

“Both sides are so even.

“It’s going to come down to the little one percenters.”

The coach said that Warrnambool Mermaids Louise McLean, Carly Pulling and Maddie White had made themselves available for netball today ahead of their grand final basketball commitments tonight and possibly tomorrow.

“But we’ll be trying to look after them a bit and maybe not give them a full game,” she said.

She believed the younger Saints Pulling, White and Rachel Dobson would handle the pressure of finals well.

“Obviously we’ve got some younger ones and some older ones who have got that finals experience,” she said.

“We’re all excited.”

Koroit analysed Warrnambool’s players in the lead-up to today’s match.

“They’re pretty even across the court,” Dobson said.

“We really can’t afford to double team any of their players because if we leave someone else open, it’s too damaging.

“We’ll just be focusing on our own opponents.”

Dobson recognised that the Saints would be carrying sound form into today’s clash after overcoming Warrnambool, Camperdown and Terang Mortlake in the last three home-and-away rounds.

“But we know Warrnambool will be throwing a few different things at us,” Dobson said.

“Who knows what (coach) Lorraine (English) plans to do.

“We know though that we’ve got 10 great netballers.”

Today’s victor will book a second semi-final appointment with Camperdown.

The loser faces the winner of tomorrow’s South Warrnambool-Cobden elimination final at Friendly Societies’ Park.

Today’s senior netball action starts at 1pm, while tomorrow’s starts at 2pm.
