Bruising encounters no bar for fearless Mikaela

18 Mar, 2010 04:00 AM
WARRNAMBOOL City defender Mikaela Gleeson doesn't let a couple of bruised ribs or swollen back muscles get her down.

The tough 15-year-old knows getting knocked around on the netball court is just a part of participating in the non-contact sport.

In the short Western Regional State League season, Mikaela has suffered two bruised ribs, a bruised diaphragm and swelling around the spine.

But she continues to hold up City's defence week after week.

Mikaela admitted her physiotherapist was reaping the rewards of her fearless attack at the ball.

"I've been to the physio multiple times," she said.

"I go before every game and afterwards she puts me back together."

Citys take on top side Hamilton in tonight's 17-and-under elimination final.

In their round 3 match-up Hamilton smashed the home side 44-21. However, Mikaela is confident her side has improved under the guidance of Chris Van Kempen.

"We work well as a team and have done really well to make the finals," she said.

"Everybody fits in perfectly. We all know where each other is and can back each other."

City has had a mixed State League campaign with three wins, two draws and two losses. It finished fourth on the ladder while Hamilton claimed top spot.

Mikaela said her side had battled with injuries, more serious than her own.

"Steph Baxter did her ankle and had to have an MRI," she said.

"We also had another ankle, a hand and a back ? just the usual netball injuries you get."

Despite the interruptions in team structure, Mikaela has been able to consistently perform on the court.

With the help of strapping and body guards, she has been a pivotal part of the team.

"I've been getting a few good intercepts which keeps the team going," she said. "I've been getting knocked around but I'm still continuing to play."

City comprises Sarah Alderson (captain), Emily Allen, Jarrah Cottee, Jessica Downing, Kristy Ludeman, Brooke Price, Sarah Robertson, Elizabeth Steel, Brooke Townsend, Chloe Zanos and Mikaela Gleeson.

In the other 17-and-under elimination final Warrnambool Football Netball Club takes on Hampden league. The winners of both matches will play off in the grand final next week.

In the open division tonight, Colac Football Netball Club clashes with Colac and District league and Warrnambool Football Netball Club battles Hampden league.
