BEFORE this year, Fran Bell was yet to coach a Western Regional State League team or an A grade Warrnambool and District Football Netball League side but in 2012, she’s doing both.
Bell has been appointed coach of Russells Creek’s top side this season while she is also guiding the Warrnambool City Netball Association (WCNA) 17 and under outfit in state league.
It makes for a busy Wednesday night.
“We train for state league at the stadium from 4pm to 5pm, then we train for Creek from 6pm to 7.30pm,” she said.
The WCNA side, which is a made up of talented youngsters from several local leagues, has been completing weekly training sessions since early December.
In the opening round of the pre-season competition a fortnight ago, the team executed what it had focused on at training — displaying a commanding style of attack.
It cruised to a 56-29 win over a depleted Western Border line-up.
“We’ve been working on front cuts and just committing to the ball and not backing out,” Bell said.
“I thought their front cuts were absolutely beautiful in the first game but (tonight) will really give us a bit more of a gauge of how we’re going.
“In all fairness to (Western Border), they didn’t have a full team.”
Following last week’s break round, 17 and under state league action returns to Warrnambool stadium tonight. WCNA is aiming for successive victories when it tackles Hampden Red, which consists of South Warrnambool players and is coming off a 52-27 loss to Hampden White.
Bell said that her team was focused on improving during the pre-season competition.
“We decided that at the end of the day, we want all the girls to get experience out of it,” she said.
“It’s not about winning, it’s about getting better.”
Like the opening round, Warrnambool City will be without star goaler Rachel Dobson tonight as she is still recovering from an ankle injury. Bell said Maddie McLeod and Sharni Moloney had stepped up in Dobson’s absence.
Meanwhile, Bell expected Russells Creek to field a young A grade line-up in Warrnambool and District Football Netball League this season.
“I think we will have a very young team and our juniors will step up into the senior grades,” she said.
“That’s what we were looking at doing.”
Bell was a joint coach of the Kangaroos’ A reserve team last season while she also steered the club’s 17 and unders to a runner-up finish and coached the 15 and unders.
