Mechanical problems forced the 19-year-old to jump aboard a girl's bike in the two-day Victoria versus South Australia Challenge.
Undeterred, the foreign machine did not loosen Laycock's grasp on the competition trophy.
The Warrnambool Motocross Club member left his senior lite opponents in his wake in the opening round on Saturday.
But the trouble started when he was gearing up for the second 12-minute round.
"I got to the starting line of the second race and noticed a part of the bike was missing," he said.
"I had to borrow another bike from a female friend."
Laycock would not disclose the mechanical issue for fear of directing blame at his mechanic.
But he admitted the transition onto Horsham rider Tamika Edwards' bike took some adjustment.
"Obviously being a girl's bike it was a lot lighter," he said.
"It took a couple of laps to get used to it but I ended up coming second."
Laycock's team repaired his bike on Saturday night in preparation for the final three rounds on Sunday.
While the 250cc four-stroke machine raced to a top-three finish in the third round, it started to falter again in the fourth.
"The bike just wasn't running properly," he said.
"It was really noisy and was slowing down in every lap."
Laycock returned to his friend's bike for the last race of the event and placed second.
The string of top-order results earned him the senior lite section victory, by one point from Cody Russ (Victoria).
"It was pretty tough because a different person won every round," Laycock said. "It came down to consistency."
Rain hampered any assaults on fastest-lap times but the south-west rider was just happy to steal the victory.
"It started off pretty slippery on both days because of the rain," he said.
"It slows you down because you have to be more cautious."
Laycock's effort helped Victoria to take interstate honours.
Laycock is leading the Western Region Motocross Series after coming second in the opening round in Warrnambool and first last weekend in Ballarat.
