AMONG the dust and daring moves of the Two-Day Motocross Open on the weekend, an old rivalry sparked up again.Warrnambool's Jeremy Laycock and Portland's Thomas Alexander clashed in the senior lites 250cc A grade class."We've grown up racing against each other," Laycock said."We have always been pretty evenly matched."Unfortunately for Laycock, it was his friendly rival who triumphed in the Warrnambool Motocross Club event at Lake Gillear on the weekend.Saturday saw practice and two rounds of racing, while yesterday there were another two rounds and a dash for cash."Saturday I got a first and a second and (yesterday) I got another two seconds," Laycock said."It was pretty close between Tom and I all the way through."He only won by probably two or three seconds."The 18-year-old finished second overall in the class, followed by Warrnambool's Chris Paton."Last year I didn't ride very much, I had a quiet year, so top three was all I was really going for this weekend," Laycock said. The Warrnambool rider said he planned to enter a couple of rounds of the under 19 rookie series, which is a national event.Alexander also took out the senior open 450cc class, edging out Swan Hill's Brenton Keep.Other Warrnambool riders who did well included Jacob Smith (second in senior B grade) and Brynley Jones (first in 250cc lite C grade).Mortlake teenager Tim O'Brien had a successful weekend, claiming firsts in the 85cc A grade and 152 two-stroke A grade while he finished second in the junior 250cc four-stroke A grade.Premier Speedway crowd favourite Max Dumesny had a son who raced, Matt Dumesny.He finished third in the 125cc A grade junior class.More than 300 riders from both Victoria and interstate took to the Lake Gillear track.Warrnambool Motocross Club president Richard Gloyne said the weekend was a success. "The weather was perfect and the racing was hard," he said."Our numbers were up considerably on last year so it's an indication that the interest is there."Gloyne highlighted the club's new start-finishing tower, which complemented its new 40-start grid.
