Brothers deliver a two-wheel salute to racing

18 Mar, 2010 04:00 AM
BROTHERS Ted and Beau Stuchbery are gearing up for a joint debut in the opening round of the Western Region Motocross Series.

The young revheads will unsettle the Lake Gillear dust on Sunday when they line up in the 85cc-150cc class races.

Ted, 13, said he looked forward to the competition after five years of racing in club events.

"I hope I go pretty well," he said.

"I like the jumps and I will have to go hard."

Beau, 11, said he also enjoyed going over jumps and riding with friends.

Ted finished second overall in last year's Warrnambool Motocross Club's internal competition, closely followed by Beau in third.

The brothers will join about 200 riders from across the region at the coastal track this weekend.

WMXC president Richard Gloyne said the first chapter of the nine-round season would reveal the front runners for the title.

"The first round is where riders see where they're at and who they're up against," he said.

"Some riders have moved up a grade and will be racing in a new level and new riders will also be having a go."

Gloyne said the Buckleys Road circuit was primed for a great day of racing.

He said clubs such as Ararat, Horsham and Castlemaine had to host competitions in winter because of water shortages.

"We are blessed to have access to water which keeps the track condition slick," he said.

"The dirt track is the main challenge because it continues to change during the day." Mortlake's Tim O'Brien is set to thrive in three classes after taking out the 85cc A grade title last year.

The 13-year-old rider will line up in the 85cc, 150cc and 250cc races.

Gloyne said all senior and junior classes would be competitive. "It's shoulder to shoulder racing and it's very fast," he said.

"The first corner is usually the make or break of the race - if you get the start to can get ahead."

Racing starts at 8.30am.

Meanwhile, Lake Gillear will host the final weekend of the Western Region Motocross Series after Portland Motocross Club was pushed off its home turf.

A tenancy agreement for the privately-owned track fell through.

This has left the Portland club homeless and unable to host the event.

WMXC benefits from owning the land where the track is situated.

Gloyne said the Portland club would still host the event despite it being on a foreign circuit.
