SPECTATORS at Simpson Speedway on Saturday night witnessed an enthralling finish in the Trevor Podger Memorial for super rods.
Winchelsea's Geoff Leigh looked like he would take out the honours after leading for 23-and-a-half out of the 25 laps in the final.
But with two laps remaining after a stoppage, as Leigh was entering turn three, he went very high and was subsequently without traction.
It allowed Simpson's Darryl Nelson to sneak through and claim the 33rd running of the memorial on his home track.
The victory sparked memories for the driver as he took out the memorial race in 1987.
Another Simpson driver who drew attention to himself was Tim Rankin as he rolled in the feature class.
Second in the memorial race was Matt Clark while Shaun Walsh finished third.
Leigh came fifth.
In the other classes on Saturday night, Warrnambool formula 500 driver Jye O'Keeffe took out round three of the Victorian Stampede Series while Allansford's Peter Kinnear claimed the Councillor's Cup for juniors.
