Sprintcar convert

HOLDEN V8 Supercar team owner and driver Paul Morris has pencilled in Premier Speedway on his 2011 calendar.

Morris plans to launch an Allansford assault when Premier Speedway hosts the huge double header of the Grand Annual Sprintcar Classic and Australian Sprintcar Championship early next year.

The 42-year-old, of the Gold Coast, has been competing in sprintcars for 18 months, while still running a two-car Holden V8 Supercar team with Bathurst-winning drivers Russell Ingall and Greg Murphy.

Morris usually races in Queensland and New South Wales but said he was looking forward to contesting the two prestigious events at Premier Speedway early next year.

"Stepping into a sprintcar has been a learning experience but I have picked it up pretty well," Morris said.

"It's like with everything else, the more experience you have the better you become.

"Sprintcars are a whole new ball game and totally different to anything else I've ever driven.

"They're short, fast and wild and I love driving them."

Morris competed at 38 meetings during the 2009-10 season, finishing seven A-main features.

"We're starting to hit our straps and make a few A-mains," he said.

"The aim is to keep improving and have a run at events like the Australian titles and the Classic."

The 2011 Grand Annual Sprintcar Classic will be held on January 22 and 23, while the Australian Sprintcar Championship is scheduled for January 28 and 29.

The championship, which is returning to Warrnambool for the first time since 2003, attracts one of the largest fields of any event throughout the racing season, including the best Australian teams and drivers.
