Speedy ride to national success

18 Aug, 2010 05:00 AM
A group of Warrnambool riders are celebrating their speedy rise to national champions.

Four South-west Mini Moto Club members clinched Australian titles in Canberra on the weekend with dominant displays.

Darren Hansford, father and daughter Brendan and Shannon O'Donnell and Jason Heaver will each carry the title of Australia's best in a number of classes after the third and final round of the national championships.

Hansford claimed his third consecutive senior pro cag class title and his first in the basic Chinese water-cooled category after being undefeated in four races during the final round.

Brendan O'Donnell, who was also undefeated in four races on the weekend, claimed the senior pro Chinese water-cooled category title and was second in the elite 40cc section after being third for the round.

His teenage daughter Shannon rode away from the titles with two crowns (junior maxi bikes and junior elite 40cc categories) and a number two ranking in the junior basic cag class. Heaver secired the senior maxi bikes title after winning the round.

For the O'Donnells and Heaver it was their first taste of national glory.

Their victories were five months in the making with the opening round of the titles held at Lake Gillear in March and the second round in Nanango, Queensland, in May.

Hansford, vice-president of the south-west club, said the national title was likely to revert back to a one-off meeting next year.

"We are looking at it being at Phillip Island which will attract a lot of interest," he said.

Club member Peter Hoare (third in the senior pro cag and senior basic Chinese water-cooled classes) also had success in Canberra while Warrnambool pair Stephen Koliopanos (pro Chinese water-cooled) and teenager Ryan Keegan (junior maxi bikes) were runners-up in their respective national titles despite not contesting the third and final round in the nation's capital.

Members are due to take to the Lake Gillear circuit on Sunday for a club show before launching into next month's Victoria versus South Australia challenge in Adelaide.
