Speedcar spectacular as mini racers return to Premier

11 Feb, 2010 04:00 AM
GOOD things come to those who wait - at least Ken Jenkins thinks so and it's a message he is keen to spread.

The Speedcar Super Series organiser is vowing not to let race fans down at Allansford's Premier Speedway this Saturday night.

After three years, Jenkins persuaded the speedway to host a round of the national series.

The class - known as midgets in the US - will take to Allansford's clay for the penultimate round of the championship.

Jenkins said the past few rounds had generated some of the tightest racing ever seen in the class.

"It has been good, old-fashioned-style racing," Jenkins said.

"Nathan Smee and reigning champ Mark Brown have been at each other's throats from day one. They're great mates off the track, but when they race it's a different story.

"It's a completely different style to sprintcar racing. It's wheel-to-wheel and a lot closer."

The Warrnambool round of the series marks the end of a five-year absence for the class. Speedcars last raced at Premier Speedway at Easter 2005.

Brown, from Sydney, holds a slender five-point margin over fellow Sydneysider Smee.

Brown will head a field of at least 20 drivers for the series' seventh round on Saturday. He said drivers were hyped up at the prospect of the banked Allansford circuit.

"The Speedcar Super Series guys have been talking about Warrnambool all year," he said.

"I had my first taste of a rollover at Warrnambool (in 1987) and I have got a little cut on my thumb still to this day where my hand came off the steering wheel and went across the bonnet.

"The best thing that could happen is that we get a slick middle, moisture on the bottom and moisture on the top where we can come through and do slide jobs."

This season hasn't been as kind to Brown as 2008-2009, where he snagged 13 feature wins.

To date this season he has clinched three feature wins and six seconds.

"It hurts, I like winning. It's an addiction. Last year we had 13 feature wins and that just hasn't been done before in speedcars. So far this year we have won three but we are starting to turn it around."

Jenkins paid tribute to Premier general manager David Mills for giving the green light to the series' maiden appearance at Warrnambool.

"We have been talking to Premier Speedway for a couple of years now about hosting a round in the series.

"It is arguably the best track in the country.

"We realise it is mainly built around sprintcars. But I give David Mills credit. He has a different outlook and is looking at things other than sprintcars. They have had super sedans."

Wingless sprints are also on the bill for Saturday. Racing starts at 6pm.
