Smee's long-held dream comes true

13 Feb, 2010 04:00 AM
FOR more than a decade, Sydneysider Nathan Smee has been itching to race at Allansford's Premier Speedway.

Tonight he will finally get to live his dream.

The 36-year-old will contest the seventh and penultimate round of the national Speedcar Super Series (SSS).

The event marks the end of a five-year speedcar absence from Warrnambool and the first time an SSS round has been held in the city.

"I can't wait," Smee said.

"Warrnambool is a nice wide track. I've been dying to race there." But it isn't just the prospect of making his Warrnambool debut which excites Smee. He is closing in on defending champion Mark Brown, with five points separating the two.

"Without a doubt Mark is the best. He is so competitive," Smee said.

"Normally he has the series all sewn up at this stage. But this year a few drivers have stepped up and it's a quality field. There are probably 10 blokes who could win it."

Smee said West Australians Scott Glazebrook and Keith Giles were in the mix to take out the championship. But it was Brown he had in his sights.

"Mark and I are pretty good mates, but when we get onto the track we're out to get each other. We don't deliberately run into one another but we rub wheels.

"It's pretty close racing."

Smee knows anything can happen in a speedcar final. He proved that two rounds ago at Lismore, NSW, when he started from 15th position and took out the feature.

"There were six laps to go and I was in eighth position. I then saw a line and went for it," he said.

"I ran high along the fence. The leaders were down the bottom so it was naturally the right place to go."

Smee, the son of former Sydney sedan star Gordon Smee, clearly remembers the first time he set eyes on Premier Speedway.

He made the journey south in 2000 to the Easter Sprintcar Trail.

He didn't take to the clay himself, just watched in awe as drivers from speedway's elite sped around the track.

"I thought then, 'I've got to try out Warrnambool'," he said.

"They had a midget round there a few years later but I couldn't go because I had a race at Parramatta.

"I was kicking myself."

At least 20 drivers will contest the Warrnambool SSS round. Action starts at 6pm.
