MORSE CODE: Driver unveils surprise 2008-09 campaign

20/11/2008 1:00:00 AM

AFTER one of speedway's longest ever apprenticeships, Warrnambool's Tim Morse will debut his brand new sprintcar at Premier Speedway on Saturday.

Morse, 30, was going to have this summer off but overwhelming support to mount a campaign has prompted a decision to run up to 15 meetings this season.

It has been a rush to get things in place for this weekend's debut.

Morse hasn't driven his new sprintcar - in fact he was to fire up the engine for the first time last night.

His transport is not ready and his car will ride in a tandem trailer to the track on Saturday afternoon.

In the past decade the talented driver has dominated V8 dirt modified racing, winning five Australian titles, 10 Victoria titles, seven South Australian titles and three Queensland titles.

Morse is looking forward to to the next stage of his speedway career despite the rush to get ready.

"I am excited. It should be good, it's a whole new experience," he said.

"It's not extremely different to what I have been doing and it would be fair to say I've had a fair grounding in dirt modifieds."

Morse drove a sprintcar for the Bill Mann team about seven years ago, finishing fourth in an A main.

"Everything we have is brand new - a JEI Chassis and 410ci motor. It's as good as anyone else's gear," the fitter and turner said.

"I'm pretty confident I'll be on the pace pretty much straight away."

Morse said he would take a cautious approach to this Saturday's debut.

"There's no point getting too carried away and tearing it up trying to go too hard too quick," he said.

"But if I'm feeling comfortable. I'll be having a go - we're not messing around. Ultimately you race to try and win and that's what we'll be doing this season."

The driver said that most of Saturday's competition had already had a couple of outings during the past month.

"We were going to have the year off but things developed, everyone got a bit excited and it all happened in a bit of a rush," he said.

"We'll test the water (this season) and then have a decent crack next year. The main goal this season is to try and qualify for the A main in the Grand Annual Sprintcar Classic and keep everything fairly straight. If we can do that I'll be happy." Morse said he always approached speedway racing with a positive attitude.

"I'll rely on my ability to drive a car and if we can set it up right then we'll do all right," he said.

"I'll have a fair idea after the first corner on Saturday night how things are going."

Morse has been driving dirt modifieds since he was 16 years old, but also has experience in formula 500s and super rods after starting his driving career in go-karts aged 10 years.

His father John raced sprintcars, super rods and then dirt modifieds alongside Tim before devoting his efforts to supporting his son's career.

"Dad's been my crew chief from day one," Morse said.

"He's always been there and basically we don't race unless we are there together."
