Milling turns to McFadden for car, advice

Milling turns to McFadden for car, advice

18 Jan, 2012 03:00 AM
QUICK transitions have become the norm for Western Australia native Taylor Milling and to ensure his latest one is smooth, he has enlisted the support of one of Australia’s leading drivers.

The in-form James McFadden has assisted Milling since he switched classes from 360s to 410s.

“I’ve only been racing 410s for four or five months,” Milling said.

“Before that I raced 360s but that was only for a couple of months and I also did wingless sprints for just under a year.”

Milling believes his latest switch to 410s is for the better.

“It’s the only way to learn, I think, to race with the better drivers,” he said.

“I don’t think it was really planned but I’m grateful for the way it’s turned out.”

Milling, from Kalgoorlie, will make his debut in this weekend’s Lucas Oil Grand Annual Sprintcar Classic and will race in McFadden’s car from last year.

With the car has come valued advice from the former Australian sprintcar champion.

“I’m grateful to have him coach me and teach me,” said Milling, who rated McFadden as a leading contender in this weekend’s prestigious race at Premier Speedway. “With his form going into it and his confidence, I think he’s a pretty good chance.

“He’d have to be a favourite.”

Milling’s father Scott owns his son’s and McFadden’s cars and helps out both drivers, while McFadden’s father Dave is Milling’s crew chief.

Glen Beaton is crew chief for McFadden.

“They’re good cars and we look after them and keep them clean,” Milling said.

The 23-year-old had a simple aim for the Classic.

“My goal is to finish. It doesn’t matter if we don’t make the main show,” he said.

“I’ve heard pretty much that it’s America versus Australia, so it will be good to be there and support the Aussies.”

Milling’s first and last appearance at Premier Speedway was memorable for the wrong reasons.

“The first time I raced there was the last round of Speedweek,” he said of the New Year’s Day World Series Sprintcars round.

“I time trialled fairly well.

“Then the third heat I had a big crash with Trevor Green. I was fine, just the car was a bit hurt.

“It’s all fixed up now, though, and we’re running that same car now.”

Milling was scheduled to fly from Perth to Melbourne this morning before racing in the President’s Cup at Avalon tonight and the Kings Sprintcar Challenge in Mount Gambier on Friday night.
