LAKE Gillear was abuzz with go-karts last weekend for the first round of the 2012 Victorian Country Series.

About 130 drivers zipped around the south-west track in a host of classes.

The top Warrnambool Kart Club performers were Corey McCullagh, who placed first in the sportsman light class, and James McDonald, who was first in the sportsman restricted light.

Club president Billy Askew was second in the sportsman restricted super heavy and Peter McDonald finished third in the sportsman restricted heavy.

Racing categories also included senior national pro, junior national light, junior national heavy, rookies, midgets, restricted 125, junior clubman, clubman super heavy, clubman over 40s, clubman light and clubman heavy.

Leopard pro and rotax pro classes were combined to form the sportsman 125.

“It was a very successful event,” Askew said. “We had great weather on Saturday but it was pretty windy, dusty and rainy on Sunday.

“We had to stop racing before lunch on Sunday because of a dust storm, but we got through it.”

The two-day event was the opening chapter of the six-part Victorian Country Series, with the next rounds to be held at Portland (April 22), Wimmera (May 20), Hamilton (September 23), Ballarat (October 21) and Cobden (November 18).

Warrnambool’s next club day is on February 25.
