 Farrell rests up

Farrell rests up

13 Mar, 2010 03:00 AM
PERTH-based sprintcar driver Ryan Farrell is used to doing things full-throttle.

Usually his speed is confined to the race track, but a call earlier this week from his old mate, South Australian Trevor Green, changed that.

With Green unable to race after suffering serious spinal injuries in November, he was desperate to maintain his commitments with sponsors and find a driver for tonight's Victorian Sprintcar Championship at Allansford's Premier Speedway.

Farrell, contracted to drive exclusively with Western Australian businessman Luch Monte, got the call from Green on Tuesday.

With no commitments in Perth, Farrell liked the idea of a trip across the Nullabor to go racing, but he had to do some fast talking to be released for the journey and then some organising.

A lack of available seats on flights from Perth to Melbourne, or to Adelaide to meet Green, meant Farrell had to board a red-eye special at midnight Thursday.

He arrived in Melbourne at 6.30am yesterday and then drove to Warrnambool, reaching the city about lunchtime.

After 12 hours on the road, Farrell fancied the idea of getting some much needed sleep before tonight's title.

"Warrnambool has always been one of my favourite tracks," he said yesterday.

"I've always had success there and I'm hoping to have some more."

Farrell claimed a career highlight finishing on the podium in The Standard Grand Annual Sprintcar Classic in January, behind American winner Shane Stewart and Sydneysider Brooke Tatnell.

With both those drivers back in America, Farrell will be among the favourites tonight, even though he will be in a different car.

Green said the gap in Farrell's schedule had allowed for a reunion of old mates.

Green and Farrell drove for the West Australian-based Kendrick team in 1999-2000.

"We are good mates," Green said.

"We are doing this for a bit of fun, to have a good time, apart from winning the race."

The scheduling has also allowed for Green's brother Darryl, a full-time crew chief with Max Dumesny, to turn spanners for Trevor for just the second time in eight years.

"It should be a lot of fun. We haven't worked together for a long time," Green said.

He said with brother "Mouse" in charge, Farrell would be on the pace.

"The track down there is as good as it gets," he said.

"I know there has been some rain down there, so with some luck I hope it is the same as it was on January 1 for the Classic and the World Series round on January 26.

"I'm looking forward to coming down."

Green said he would not return behind the wheel until next season.

Farrell will be joined by former national champion and World Series Sprintcars championship runner-up Robbie Farr and impressive youngsters James McFadden and Grant Anderson.

Hard-charger Dave Murcott, defending Victorian champion Matthew Reed and Tasmanian title-holder Jason Redpath are also expected to be on the pace.

Tonight's title also doubles as a round of the Sprintcar Association of Victoria (SRA) series, meaning Simpson's John Vogels will be looking to extend his lead in the series.

Warrnambool's Jamie Veal, who has been consistently quick in recent weeks, will be out to close the gap on Vogels.

They are among 10 south-west drivers entered.

The list also includes Warrnambool's Ashley Burke, Allansford's Stephen Bell, Daniel Newnham, Darren Mollenoyux, Tim Morse, Simon Van Ginneken, Darren Russell and Carl Ludeman.

Premier Speedway general manager David Mills said 44 drivers had entered the title and a field of 38 junior sedans would support the sprintcar program.
