BUSHFIELD’S Paul Robilliard will take added confidence into a busy month of racing after a last-to-first triumph in the wingless sprints front row challenge at Simpson Speedway last Saturday.
Robilliard is among a big contingent of drivers planning to contest the state wingless title at Allansford’s Premier Speedway on February 25.
Robilliard, a former Victorian Nos Sprints champion who has had a limited campaign so far this season, said he was looking forward to returning to Simpson on February 18 for a final shakedown before the state title.
His win at Simpson last week was full of merit after he finished highest qualifer.
But under the unique front row challenge format, he had a choice of either starting from pole or racing for $500 if he won from the back of the field. He elected to start from the rear, with a guaranteed $250 in prizemoney, the lure of $250 if he could get to sixth and a further $500 if he could win.
In going to the rear, the top seven also had to go with him, effectively inverting the grid.
Robilliard made steady progress and claimed the $1000 winner’s purse.
“I haven’t done a lot of racing this season. That would have been my fifth race,” he said.
“If we can carry that form through we would have a good show, but it doesn’t always turn out like that.”
