 Edney takes state title

Edney takes state title

01 Mar, 2010 04:00 AM
KICKBOXER Sam Edney demolished a serving of bacon and eggs for breakfast yesterday in similar fashion to his opponent on Saturday night - quickly.

The 23-year-old, who shed four kilograms before the Muay Thai World Kickboxing Association Victorian superwelterweight title fight in Shepparton, yesterday celebrated his victory in style with about 30 supporters.

Edney and his trainer Steve Andrews were the toast of the breakfast, where they relived Edney's one minute and 59-second knockout win over Melbourne fighter Rohulla Paykari.

"It's always good to get a quick knockout," Edney said.

"I stunned him with some punches and he ended up going down with a couple more kicks."

Edney, who trains at the White Tiger Gym in Warrnambool's industrial estate, said he was delighted to claim the Victorian title just two-and-a-half years after taking up the sport.

"I would have thought winning a Victorian title would have been hard work, and I have put a lot of hard work in. It's taken a bit to sink in."

Edney said the worst part about his night was waiting four hours "out the back" for his bout, which was scheduled to be over five two-minute rounds.

Andrews hailed Edney's performance, saying he was the first south-west fighter to claim a state title since Clayton Collyer eight years ago."It was probably the most relaxed I have seen him," Andrews said of his charge's build-up.

"Everything went well, everything we had worked on worked out."

Edney, who had fought Paykari twice before Saturday for two wins, was more relaxed than Andrews pre-fight.

"I probably had the most butterflies I've ever had," the trainer said.

"You always wonder whether you have done enough, especially when we have fought him twice and there was the unknown factor of him changing trainer and to a southpaw style."

Andrews said Edney had been offered a crack at the Western Australian title but Edney would have to fight at 66 kilograms. Having dropped four kilograms to fight at 68 kilograms, Andrews said the weight division was unsuitable.

"We'll just see what comes around," Andrews said.

"He has a fight in April but after no injuries from this one we might look at something else sooner." Buses and car loads of supporters made the trip to Shepparton for the fight with Andrews saying as many as 30 were on hand to cheer on Edney.

"He's had several fights in Shepparton now and he is starting to get a following among them so it was good."
