WARRNAMBOOL Gold yesterday snaffled the first ticket to the Tuesday Pennant grand final, winning the second semi-final against City Memorial Gold by 10 shots at Dennington.
The Timor Street brigade’s win has set up a huge intraclub preliminary final between City Gold and City Green next Tuesday.
Green earned its spot in the penultimate round of finals when it survived yesterday’s knockout semi-final against Port Fairy, despite losing two rinks.
Warrnambool Gold skipper Helen Lock told The Standard her team had no preference who its faced in the grand final.
“We don’t mind who we play,” she said.
“We get along well with them all.
“We will just have to do our best.” Warrnambool recorded two winning rinks towards the overall triumph yesterday.
Helen Lock pipped Denise Hillier 29-23 and Faye Bolden doubled Joan Stevenson’s shot count 30-15.
City Gold’s Chris McMahon had a solid victory over Bev Hayes 28-17.
“Our rink had a good start and we were up by 14 shots,” Lock said.
“But they (Hillier) came back after lunch.”
Lock was supported by third Jane Rea, second Lorraine Shaw and lead Jean Harkness.
In the second semi-final yesterday, Port Fairy won two rinks, with Linda Creek defeating Helen Kelly 25-19 and Gill Phillips edging Karina Ellery 24-19.
But the all-conquering effort of Green skip Catherine Hoy over Kay Miller, 33-15, propelled her team into the preliminary final.
Green snatched the 71-64 win from Port.
Meanwhile, City Memorial Pink has secured a place in the division two grand final after defeating Dennington 75-61 at Terang.
Dennington will get a second chance in the preliminary final against Warrnambool Green next week, after Green defeated Mortlake 69-56.
St John’s two-pronged attack at the division three title has come unstuck in dramatic fashion, after it lost both finals today.
Warrnambool Red defeated St John’s Red 56-36 in the second semi-final at Dennington.
St John’s Red will get another shot at a grand final place in the preliminary showdown against Port Fairy Red next week.
Port Fairy toppled St John’s White 81-23 in the second semi-final yesterday.
