Warrnambool Gold maintains perfect record over rival

11 Jan, 2012 03:00 AM
WARRNAMBOOL Gold has maintained its perfect record against City Memorial Gold this season but the ladder leader is refusing to get carried away.

Warrnambool’s Pat Boyd said her team, which consolidated top spot after a win against its rival yesterday, knew it was the results at the pointy end of the season that mattered most.

“It’s nice if you can finish on top, but you’ve got to win the big one,” she said.

Warrnambool triumphed in all three rinks in yesterday’s top-of-the-table pennant clash at Cramer Street to roll City Gold 87-67.

Players were forced to endure difficult conditions in the first match after the festive period break.

“It was very windy, which makes it so hard for everybody,” Boyd said.

“But a lot of our girls handled it very, very well.”

Faye Bolden’s visiting rink recovered from an early 10-shot deficit to deal Denise Hillier a 29-27 loss, while Helen Lock led most of the day to defeat Joan Stevenson 24-20.

Warrnambool’s Bev Hayes skipped away in the last 10 ends to overcome Kaye Maddern 34-20.

“It was quite a surprise,” Boyd said of the clean sweep.

“When you go to their green they have the home-ground advantage, but it really didn’t matter (yesterday), which was good for our girls.

“We always enjoy playing against them.”

The away victory was particularly pleasing for Warrnambool Gold, as this season’s Tuesday pennant grand finals will be held at City Memorial Bowls Club under a rotating system.

City’s second side also suffered a loss yesterday, going down to Terang 80-61.

Terang’s Gwen Lock enjoyed a convincing 39-15 triumph over City Green’s Catherine Hoy.

City’s Chris McMahon edged out Margaret Sumner 21-16, while Karina Ellery and Jean Fidge could not be separated, finishing 25 apiece.

Port Fairy was too strong for Timboon, winning 77-59, with Gill Phillips storming to a 40-12 win over Betty Russell.

In the remaining match, Warrnambool Blue accounted for City Blue 78-63.
