AFTER creating some breathing space on the ladder, Dennington Red has the chance to finetune its side ahead of the Western District Bowls Association finals series.
The second-ranked team held off Warrnambool Gold 96-82 on Saturday to virtually sew up second spot with two home and away rounds remaining.
Dennington's Les Johnson, who is on the club's selection committee, said its premier team had used a maximum of about 20 players this season.
"We've done some tweaking of who's playing with who but we've got our order reasonably settled," he said.
"(Saturday) was basically playing for second place.
"Now we should have that double chance in finals, we can try a couple of things if we need to."
Johnson said that one successful tweak this season has been the promotion of Ian Wood.
"My skipper was in the second side five or six weeks ago but he's really come to the plate," he said.
"The two in our rink (Darren King) has done the same.
"Also, Maureen Drennan stepped up from being a two and played three (on Saturday) for the first time in the top side."
Drennan's rink - skippered by Ian Quigley - produced the biggest win at Timor Street on Saturday, defeating Kevin Boyd 32-10.
"Ian got a six just before tea which set the tone for the rest of the day," Johnson said.
"That rink was able to get away and hold sway for the whole game."
Dennington's other victorious rink was John Murnane, who edged out Brian "Blackie" Lenehan 25-21.
Host skipper Paul O'Donnell defeated Barry Crimmin 31-19 while Wood and John Leishman were locked at 20-all.
"We had a really good game," Johnson said of the latter.
"The biggest margin was maybe four for the day.
"It was see-sawing but the draw was fitting."
Dennington Red's run home includes matches against Terang (home) and Timboon (away).
"Terang has had one of those up and down seasons so it's hard to predict how we'll go," Johnson said.
"We're probably favourites but you're never over the line in any game.
"Our two losses (this season) have been two upsets."
Despite Warrnambool Gold's loss on Saturday, it is still 28 points ahead of Timboon on the ladder after the latter was unable to swing its momentum on the weekend, suffering its third straight loss.
The finals-bound side was thrashed by host Terang 120-67.
In other matches, Port Fairy defeated Mortlake 107-76 after triumphing in all four rinks while Warrnambool Blue was too strong for Dennington White, winning 110-77.
Ladder leader City Memorial Red overcame clubmate City Memorial Gold 100-78 despite the former's Peter Pangrazio and Ray Hoy being defeated.
