SELECTION panels were given the tick of approval on the weekend when two intra-club matches went in favour of the top-ranked sides.
Western District Bowls Division powerhouses City Memorial and Warrnambool have the luxury of fielding multiple sides in Saturday pennant’s division one competition.
But it comes with complications, as selectors have to rank the teams in order of talent and fill them accordingly.
Perhaps buoyed by its underdog status, bottom side City Memorial Green did its best to turn the tables on fourth-placed City Gold on the weekend.
Gold is the second-tier outfit from the Albert Park-based club, behind City Red, which is perched second on the ladder.
While Green recorded one winning rink, it was the favoured Gold which collected three to take the 95-81 victory.
Gold skipper Gary Smart sneaked in front of Frank Thomas 26-18.
Smart was flanked by rink members Ian Richardson, Bruce Collie and Darryl Andrew.
“Wherever there is any intra-club game, there is always some rivalry and friendly banter,” Smart said.
“Everyone has their pride that they want to uphold.”
Meanwhile, Gold’s Fred Fish pipped Ron Horne 23-17 and Ron Grant defeated Keith Symons 28-18.
Frank Dalton flew the flag for Green, defeating Bill Square 28-18.
Down the hill at Timor Street, Warrnambool’s top-ranked side Gold defeated Blue 107 to 88.
Gold won three rinks to secure the victory.
In other matches, City Red toppled Port Fairy Red 125-76, Dennington Red was too strong for Mortlake Blue 128-59 and Terang Green defeated Timboon Gold 107-79.
