NEWLY-crowned City Memorial Bowls Club men’s champion Bill Square is not expecting any royal reprieve from Terang today.
The City Gold skipper will guide his rink of Owen Burleigh, Billy Timms and Daryl Howland for the first round back of Western District Bowls Division Saturday pennant action since Christmas.
Square, who won the City title last Sunday, predicts a tough match between his fifth-placed Gold and eighth-placed Terang Green.
“We’re expecting a pretty hard tussle,” he told The Standard this week.
“We’re knocking on the door (of the top four). We just have to keep winning in the next few weeks.”
Square played for division two premier City Green last season before being promoted to Gold.
The former Grassmere dairy farmer said a happy rink made for a successful rink.
“We’re all good mates,” he said. “We team well together and we’ve had some luck along the way.
“We’ve had a pretty good season so far.”
Square’s credentials to skip were made even more impressive last weekend.
The 69-year-old collected seven club championships at his previous base, Christchurch, but had not enjoyed the same success at City Memorial in his 10 years of membership.
That was until Sunday. Square advanced through about five games to meet David Clements in the first-to-25 final.
The large crowd saw Clements jump to an early three-shot lead before Square sprinted past to take the 25-11 victory.
“I’ve been in pretty good form,” Square said.
“But you never know what will happen in bowls.
“We had pretty windy conditions on Sunday. I just bowled better on the day.”
