ONE shock wasn't enough in ladies' pennant yesterday.
It was a double whammy of upsets as Warrnambool Blue knocked off Terang while clubmate and powerhouse Warrnambool Gold went down to Port Fairy.
Warrnambool Blue had just one win to its name before yesterday while Terang was sitting third.
"I don't think anyone expected us to win but we all combined very well," Warrnambool's Pat McCorkell said.
Her rink, skippered by Maree Lynch, led for most of the day before eclipsing Carol Cardwell 21-14.
"Joan Nicholson and Val Duffield were both down but they came from behind to win," McCorkell said.
While Duffield defeated Jenny Meade 30-21, Nicholson edged out Margaret Sumner by one shot.
As Warrnambool Blue prepared to celebrate a comfortable 17-shot victory which lifted it off the bottom of the ladder, it was tense for the club's top side at Port Fairy.
Warrnambool Gold succumbed to the host by two shots.
Port Fairy's Margaret Yeoman wasn't quite sure what the secret behind her team's recent success was. The team surprised the competition again last week by toppling Terang.
"We've just been a bit lucky," she said before describing yesterday's match as exciting.
Kaye Miller's rink was the last on the green.
"She was down so she just had to hang in there," Yeoman said.
"She didn't bowl her last shot.
"It was a chance she didn't want to take."
While Miller went down to Pat Boyd by six shots, Yeoman defeated Helen Lock by five shots and Jan Norton recorded a 28-25 victory over Bev Hayes.
In other matches, City Memorial Gold shrugged off Lawn Tennis 74-57 while City Memorial Green travelled to Timboon, where the visitors enjoyed a 75-46 victory.
Berryl Oakley's rink was the stand-out, winning 27-15 over Timboon's Noelene Richards.
