Scott makes early start to preparation

13 Feb, 2010 04:00 AM
THERE's a fair chance that Brian Scott was out of bed before other pennant players this morning.

The City Memorial bowler has to be an early bird, and also a night owl, occasionally as he takes care of the club's greens.

"Sometimes you have to get up at 6.30am to water them and sometimes you might have to go down at 9.30pm," he said. "We've got some good workers who look after them."

Last night's weather will determine what sort of sprinkling Scott needs to carry out this morning ahead of this afternoon's Western District Bowls Association blockbuster at Cramer Street.

City Memorial Red and Warrnambool Gold will do battle in the top-of-the-table clash.

Scott craves the showdowns between the association's powerhouses.

"It's always a grudge match," he said. "We'd like to think we can beat them but you never know what's going to happen until the day."

The dedicated committeeman plays third for Ray Hoy.

"We've got a very compatible rink," he said.

"You need the team of 16 to gel but it's also very important to have a rink that works well together, which is one of the reasons our rink enjoys our bowls.

"We've had a change here and there but we've pretty much been together for a couple of years."

Last week Timboon challenged City Red, which will play Dennington in next week's final home-and-away round.

"It's going to be good finishing off with tough matches," said Scott, who will come up against good friend Ian Quigley next week.

"I started off playing indoor bowls with Dennington, then progressed to the corporate cup.

"I used to play with Ian Quigley, now we play against each other in division one."

Scott's skills when it comes to bowls can be attributed to one of his previous sports.

"I used to do archery," the 67-year-old said.

"You need arm-eye co-ordination for both."

In other matches today, Warrnambool Blue is hoping to upset Dennington while Terang Green hosts City Memorial Gold.

Timboon should account for City Memorial Green while Port Fairy Red and Mortlake Blue are tipped to have a tight tussle.
