PORT Fairy skipper Peter Grenfell was on the right side of a rare turn of events in Western District Bowls Division Saturday pennant action on the weekend.
Grenfell guided Port Fairy’s only winning rink against City Memorial Green. But it wasn’t just any win.
Grenfell and his rink of Steve Gibb, Lyle Allen and Graeme Dix defeated City’s Ian Brown 42-15.
The impressive 27-shot triumph was enough to carry Port Fairy to the overall victory, 99-93.

“It’s not very common for that to happen,” Grenfell, who has played for 30 years, told The Standard yesterday.
“I’ve been in rinks where we’ve scored so badly that it brings the rest of the team down.
“So it’s nice to be able to help this time.”
Green won the other three games on the City turf.
Skipper Keith Symons defeated Jim Lowe 28-23, Barry Rawlings pipped Alan Parker 19-16 and Frank Dalton outclassed Chris Fox 31-18. But it was the in-form Grenfell rink that finished with the glory.
“My teammates just said I must have lucky bowls,” Grenfell laughed.
“We’ve had three wins in the last three games and we’ve won them all by a reasonable amount.
“I think everybody has been playing consistently well and we’ve been having a bit of fun along the way.”
Grenfell has spent most of his career at Sunnyside Bowls Club in Horsham but moved to Port Fairy five years ago.
He said he was a “reluctant skipper” as he has been involved in the game for three decades and would like a younger player to take the reins.
But if Grenfell’s solid form persists, he might find it difficult to convince Port Fairy selectors otherwise.
In other matches, City Red defeated Dennington Red 95-88, Warrnambool Gold had three winning rinks to defeat Mortlake Blue 95-84, Terang Green narrowly escaped City Gold 82-80 and Warrnambool Blue upset host Timboon Gold 93-87.
