THERE'S a mystery surrounding bowls that Warrnambool Blue skipper John O'Brien can't explain.
His side turned a 15-shot deficit at tea to narrowly defeat rival City Memorial Gold in round 10 of the Western District Bowls Association at the weekend.
Blue beat Gold by just one shot. O'Brien said the victory was a mystery.
"It was a game of two halves," he said.
"We were down at tea and were able to turn that around. Sometimes in bowls that happens for no apparent reason.
Warrnambool Blue was one rink up before afternoon tea.
By match end, it was only one rink down. C. Jensen lost to Ron Horne's rink 19-27.
City Memorial Gold entered the competition fifth placed on the ladder. Warrnambool Blue was one rung below.
The two sides have kept their positions but are now on equal points.
O'Brien said Blue would have a tough task this weekend when it faces Port Fairy.
"That's always a challenge for us. Port Fairy is never an easy one."
He attributed a solid team performance for Saturday's victory.
Warrnambool Gold regular Ken Bell stepped down to the club's number two side last weekend. Bell played in O'Brien's rink.
"Everyone stepped up in my rink which makes it a lot easier to skipper," he said.
In other matches, ladder leader Warrnambool Gold maintained its dominance.
It beat Timboon Gold at home, 85-106.
Terang Green comfortably defeated Port Fairy Red 106-82.
The home team took out three rinks and drew one, with P. Reid and A. Parker both scoring 21 shots.
City Memorial Red beat Mortlake Blue by 22 shots.
Meanwhile City Memorial Green continued an unlucky run, losing to Dennington Red 82-107, keeping its bottom spot on the ladder.
