A SELECTIVE cool change allowed just four Tuesday pennant matches to be completed in the Warrnambool and District Bowls Division yesterday.
Persistent hot weather forced the other eight scheduled matches to be abandoned as competition rules do not permit play after the temperature hits 34 degrees.
A light breeze swept through parts of Warrnambool and Koroit but other greens across the district, including Port Fairy and Terang, were not offered such reprieve.
The only division one match to be completed was between top side Warrnambool Gold and Port Fairy.
Gold had a real battle on its hands as the visitors thrived on the Timor Street turf.
Bev Hayes narrowly escaped Gill Phillips 20-19 but Faye Bolden comfortably accounted for Linda Creek 27-15.
Port skipper Kay Miller put on a show against Helen Lock 24-15.
Gold held on for the 62-58 win.
Up the hill at City Memorial, the anticipated intra-club rivalry match between City Gold and City Green was abandoned after seven ends.
At the time, Gold was ahead 29-20.
The encounters between Terang and Warrnambool Blue and City Memorial Blue and Timboon were also cancelled.
However, fifth-placed Terang could be secretly celebrating its drawn result as it is now on equal points (75) with fourth-ranked Port Fairy.
The latter is ahead by 23 shots and has a more favourable match-up next week against seventh-placed Timboon, compared to Terang’s assignment against second-ranked City Gold.
Division two recorded one completed match, between host Koroit and Mortlake in which the visitor won 73-54.
The cool Timor Street greens provided the surface for two division three matches.
Warrnambool Red defeated Port Fairy 52-32 and Warrnambool White toppled City Memorial 54-43.
