HILARY Hamilton got a shock when she ventured down to Dennington to have a practice with Port Fairy yesterday.
The regular division two player learned she had been brought into Port's top grade side ahead of today's Warrnambool and District Ladies Bowling Association first semi-final.
When she arrived at Dennington, the other bowlers presented her with the surprise news.
"I was told that one of the ladies, Joyce Wright, couldn't play," she said.
Hamilton will be Kaye Miller's second today when Port Fairy takes on Terang at Dennington.
"My first thought was 'I hope the wind's not like this tomorrow'," she said after yesterday's blowy conditions at the venue.
"It will probably take us a little while to get to know the greens."
Hamilton admitted she was slightly nervous about making her 2009-10 division one debut in a semi-final.
"But the team will be great to play with and they will be fully supportive," she said.
"I filled in for them a couple of times last year.
"I didn't do too bad."
Hamilton, who is a nurse, only started playing pennant full-time this season, making the transition after being a social bowler.
She conceded she knew very little about Terang.
"All I know is they've got Margaret Sumner, who is a very good bowler," she said.
Dennington will also host the second semi-final between last summer's grand finalists City Memorial Gold and Warrnambool Gold, with neither side able to boast bragging rights over the other this season.
The teams tied in their first encounter, while in their last encounter, Warrnambool was on its way to a convincing victory but the match was called off due to heat.
In division two at Port Fairy, City Memorial Blue and Dennington are in the second semi-final while Warrnambool Green and City Pink are in the first semi.
City Memorial Bowls Club will host division three.
Warrnambool Red and Port Fairy will square off for a spot in the premiership match while Koroit and Warrnambool White will play each other in the first semi.
