IT's lucky Merna Whitehead and Dianne Murch are good sports or else the trip back to South Australia would have been awkward for Jenny Waugh and Heather Richards.
The group travelled to Warrnambool together for the Australia Day pairs tournament, which wrapped up yesterday.
The quality field meant there were five pairs - including the two from South East Women's Bowling Association (SEWBA) - vying for top spot with one match remaining.
"We knew we had to win by at least one shot," Waugh said.
"After the first two or three ends we felt pretty comfortable."
While Mount Gambier's Waugh and Port Macdonnell's Richards enjoyed a convincing 20-12 win in their final match, their South Australian counterparts were dealt a shattering blow.
"They lost their last game by one shot," Richards said.
So what would the car trip be like on the way home?
"They're both very good sports and we're all good friends," Waugh said.
"They'll be happy we won and we're disappointed that they lost by a shot.
"That's what bowls is all about - friendship."
Mount Gambier's Whitehead and Mundulla's Murch finished the $5000 tournament in fifth spot.
This year marked only the second time Waugh and Richards played together.
"The first time was when we came here last year," Waugh said.
"We lost a couple of games and finished seventh.
"We play against each other in our association.
"We were hoping to come over this year and win but it's such a strong field.
"It was great to have a win in the end."
The duo admitted they weren't feeling too much pressure heading into their final match.
"We were playing well (leading up to it)," Waugh said.
"When one of us wasn't doing something, the other one was.
"It was a great team effort."
While Warrnambool and District Ladies Bowling Association missed its pennant this week, SEWBA will contest its matches on Friday.
Before that, the busy Richards is entered in a singles tournament in the south-east.
The triumphant pair, who didn't drop a match over the two days, agreed Warrnambool Bowls Club put on a premier tournament.
"It's the best tournament I've been to and I've been everywhere for them," Richards said.
"It's very well-run and the meals, the people, the club ? everything is just brilliant."
