Jumping trials fail to launch

03 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
TODAY’S scheduled jumps trials at Warrnambool racecourse have been cancelled due to insufficient numbers.

Schooling will take place instead of the six-race card, which attracted just five nominations.

However, Warrnambool Racing Club chief executive John Green said about 21 horses from across Victoria would use the facility for less-intense training today.

“We’re just providing a schooling opportunity so horses can start the next step in their preparation,” he said.

“It’s for anyone who wants to give their horses some practice. Up to six horses can run around in a simulated race in trials, but schooling is less-intense exercise.

“They will just go around in ones or twos.”

The trials were the first on the Warrnambool calendar this year.

Green said three more trial dates had been set before the club hosts its first jumps race of the season on April 2.

He said trials would be more popular as jumpers reach the peak of their preparation.

“It’s up to trainers to come up with an appropriate program and determine whether their horses are ready for trials,” he said.

The track will be open from 10am today.

The next trials, which feature hurdles and steeples, are on Friday, February 17.

Murray Bridge kicks off the national jumps racing program on March 4 before Sandown hosts the first of the Victorian calendar on March 28.

So where are all these trainers and owners "flocking" to jumps racing? WIth the first race a month away I would think any trainers wanting to get new horses involved would have these horses more than ready to start trialling. Scrapping KPIs and increased prze money seems to be doing little to spike interest in this cruel "sport". End it now before more horses are killed.

being the track is still rather hard this time of year most trainers wouldnt bother with trialing the horses. These horses generally run in wet weather conditions hence why jumps programme is held in the wetter months of the year. But seems the author or this story failed to mention that part??

Kerri, all you have done is prove that you have no idea about the sport. congratulations.

What is the obsession with the word 'flocking'. This has nothing to do with trials or schooling. Go and find something better to campaign about, that you at least have some idea about.

Oh Kerri, just go away. You have proven time and time again that you have no idea whatsoever. Most horses wouldnt have even had a flat run as yet let alone need a jumps trial.

I have a good grasp on the death, injury and 'wastage" rate thanks Micky. And we will stop campaigning against jumps racing the day it ends
