WARRNAMBOOL trainer Matthew Williams is lifting his sights with exciting galloper Flying Tessie after her last-to-first win at Flemington on Melbourne Cup Day.
The four-year-old Testa Rossa mare is entered for the $1 million Emirates Stakes (1600m) at Flemington on Saturday but is more likely to be saved for the listed Summoned Stakes (1500m) at Sandown on November 14.
Flying Tessie unleashed a powerful finish to win a $100,000 rating 89 handicap over 1400 metres on Tuesday, earning a rave review from jockey Kerrin McEvoy.
"He was a bit surprised by her turn of foot," Williams said yesterday.
"He said she's a black type horse if we can get the right race."
Williams wants to assess acceptors for the group one Emirates this morning before deciding a course of action for Flying Tessie.
"At this stage we're probably 80-20 towards the Summoned Stakes," he said.
The popular result was a welcome change of luck for Williams at the Melbourne Cup meeting.
His previous two runners, Danish Wedding and Sera Cielo, pulled up with health problems.
Williams said the win also put a smile back on the face of owner Colin McKenna, who earlier in the day had endured the late scratching of Melbourne Cup runner Changingoftheguard.
Flying Tessie was a $50,000 yearling purchase at the Victorian Premier Sales and has already rewarded her connections with more than $126,000 prizemoney.
