ONE of the south-west's most popular race meetings is set to go international.
The annual Dunkeld Cup run against the stunning backdrop of the Grampians will be given a jump in status under a move to capitalise on the day's growing success.
While south-west racing enthusiasts have long regarded the Dunkeld meeting as a great day out, Country Racing Victoria wants the world to know all about it.
This year's November 13 fixture, the club's only race meeting of the year, will be upgraded to TAB status and with it, a lift in prize money of more than 40 per cent.
Country Racing Victoria chairman Michael Caveny told The Standard the move from a non-TAB meeting would have significant benefits for all parties.
"This year's Dunkeld Cup meeting will be put on the international stage," he said.
"It will receive television coverage on Sky Channel and TVN. The meeting will be the feature Saturday country meeting on November 13. It will be beamed all around Australia and through various parts of the world through the Sky Channel network.
"The meeting usually has spectators from all over the state and interstate we feel the meeting will get a lot bigger once its put around Australia and the world."
The Dunkeld race course is acknowledged as one of the most picturesque in Australia, sitting at the base of the Grampians. The once-a-year meeting has seen phenomenal growth since its humble beginnings with attendances growing from 5000 in 2005 to more than 11,000 last year.
From no marquees in 2000 to more than 180 last year, the club has been amazed with its continued growth and now Caveny believes the meeting can grow further.
"Country Racing is confident that the spin-offs from having the meeting beamed all around Australia and the world will provide great benefits for on-going tourism in the area.
We believe people will see the magnificent backdrops of the Grampians and want to come and visit the town at various times of the year.
"Apart from the Warrnambool May Carnival, the Dunkeld Cup meeting is one of our jewels in our crown.
"I think there is only one similar meeting in Australia and that is at Birdsville where they bring all the infrastructure into the course for the day, we do the same thing at Dunkeld."
Dunkeld's meeting falls on the same day of the final Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival feature day, the Sandown Classic, hosted by the Melbourne Racing Club at Sandown.
Caveny revealed that seven members of the Melbourne Racing Club committee made the trip from Melbourne to Dunkeld to experience the meeting last year.
"No one is really sure why Dunkeld Cup Day is such a success," Caveny said
"The Melbourne Racing Club holds its biggest race day at Sandown on the same day but last year some of its committee decided to enjoy the experience. They were amazed with how big the meeting is.
"Dunkeld Cup Day has turned into a real boutique race meeting. The hard work which the Dunkeld Racing Club has put into the meeting has been outstanding."
