THREE south-west trainers are looking to plunder lucrative city races today and tomorrow.
Yangery's Jarrod McLean is hoping promising four-year-old Nicastro will give his spring plans a kick-a-long with a win in today's $100,000 65th Anniversary of The End of World War II Listed Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield.
Hamilton trainer Barbara Marshman has veteran Bolle entered in today's $70,000 RSL Handicap (2000m) at Caulfield while Winslow's Ciaron Maher has his stayer Riveted in the same race. Maher is facing another busy weekend, preparing talented hurdlers Man of Class and Regal Heir for feature jumps races at Sandown tomorrow.
Nicastro, which is expected to start one of the main fancies for the race, prefers rain-affected ground - a factor McLean hopes could provide the gelding with an advantage today and during the spring carnival.
"It's going to be heavy going which suits him," McLean said yesterday.
Nicastro was fifth in an $80,000 race over 1050 metres at Morphettville first-up after a spell two weeks ago.
"I was hoping to create a 1000-metre horse out of a 1400-to-1600-metre horse. We targetted the race to have him fresh first up, he ran but he just didn't win."
He said Nicastro would enjoy the expected soft going and extra ground and that his charge would have benefitted from the Adelaide run.
McLean said he would leave the race plan to top jockey Craig Williams , who takes over the ride from Nikita Beriman who has a full book of rides at Coleraine.
McLean said he was unsure of Nicastro's spring plans.
"We'll just see where he fits in, where he measures up. I think he will play a part in the spring in some way. I think he will definitely measure up to a Saturday race, I'm hoping he can measure up for a Saturday support race, a fringe, listed, group 3 type of race on Caulfield Cup day or Cox Plate day."
McLean will have an eye on proceedings at Coleraine this afternoon where Beriman rides Speedymac in the $15,000 Coleraine Cup (1800m)
"He has got a good chance," he said.
"He was disappointing at Sandown over 2100 metres on a heavy 10, it might just have been a bit too much for him. But on his previous form at Warrnambool, it will hold him in pretty good stead."
He predicted Beriman would have to drop Speedymac to the back of the field from barrier 12.
"He will need a bit of luck and a good ride from Nikita to get home," he said.
