Cup odds slashed for in-form Moudre

20 Aug, 2010 01:00 AM
BOOKMAKERS have slashed the spring cups odds of south-west rising star Moudre following a powerful victory at Flemington.

The Ciaron Maher-trained gelding's ease in recording the first-up win drew an immediate response from bookmakers, who halved his Melbourne Cup odds to $21.

After jockey Craig Williams suggested Moudre could have a similar metoric rise from obscurity as last year's Melbourne Cup favourite Alcopop, the pair are now on the same fourth line of betting for the 150th running of the famous race.

The five-year-old, bred by Warrnambool businessman Colin McKenna, is also fifth equal favourite for the Caulfield Cup at $16, behind joint cups favourite Faint Perfume at $10.

Williams is keen to stay on board Moudre after his second city win in a row in the Colin Johnston Handicap (1410m), having won over 1800m at the same course in May by nearly four lengths.

"Ciaron knows the horse very well and he's going to take him places," said Williams, whose only previous ride on Moudre was in a barrier trial win at Geelong last month.

"He's a Ggoup one trainer already and he's great with staying horses.

"We saw last year with Alcopop and this horse may have a similar story."

Having won five of his last six starts with the Blevic gelding, Maher has entered him for the two cups and the Cox Plate.

While he was keen not to read too much into Saturday's win, the trainer is keen to see how far Moudre can go in the Spring.

"We've got a plan to aim him for the better races and take it one week at a time and if he keeps stepping up like he has been obviously we'll put him in better company and see what happens," he said.

"He seems to like Flemington so we'll try to bring him back here as much as we can."

Maher said Moudre appealed to him as the type of horse which could run 3200m.

"We'll just have to wait and see. He hasn't been beyond 1800 metres yet," he said.

Maher, who won the 2007 group one Emirates Stakes with Tears I Cry, has his eyes on the group two Herbert Power Stakes at Caulfield in October as a cups qualifier.
