Camperdown Cup a step closer to a jumps career for The Fuzz

21 Jan, 2012 03:00 AM
FORMER top-class stayer The Fuzz will use today’s Camperdown Cup (1600m) as a stepping stone to a jumping career under his new trainer Ciaron Maher.

The Fuzz was trained by David Hayes when he won the 2007 group 3 Geelong Cup and the 2008 group 2 Blamey Stakes and garnered placings in other stakes races, including a second place in the 2009 group 2 Perth Cup (2400 metres) and a third in the group 2 Cox Stakes (2100 metres).

The Fuzz’s part-owner Colin McKenna said he and his fellow owners were looking forward to the horse running in the $15,000 Camperdown Cup.

“He’s one of our favourite horses. He’s given us plenty of highs with his Geelong Cup and Blamey Stakes wins and his runs over in Perth back in 2009,” McKenna said.

“He always gave 100 per cent, but he did both tendons in his front legs in the Perth Cup.

“We gave him a long break after his Perth Cup run.

“We decided to get him back because the horse is feeling so good.”

The Warrnambool Racing Club committeeman said the low point in The Fuzz’s career was in 2007 when he was scratched on the morning of the Melbourne Cup with a foot abscess after running second in the Saab Quality on the Saturday.

“We were confident that he would have been competitive in the Melbourne Cup, especially after his Geelong Cup win and his second placing in the Saab, but it’s no good crying over spilt milk.

“Ciaron’s had the horse in work for a few months and he’s really happy with how he’s progressing, but we’ve got a jumping career pencilled in for him.”

McKenna revealed he put the gelding over a few hurdles when the horse was trained by David Hayes and gave a glowing report on his jumping ability.

“David always had a big wrap on the horse as a jumper. He used to say he was just a natural jumper. Ciaron has schooled him over a few jumps at his place and he reckons he’s an ideal jumper,” McKenna said.

“He’s shown us he has plenty of staying ability. We’ll get him qualified to run in jumps races before making any big plans.”

The Fuzz is not the only McKenna-owned horse on the comeback trail this weekend. Pentacolo, which won the Great Eastern Steeplechase at Oakbank in 2009, runs over 1550 metres at Mount Gambier tomorrow.

“We’ll set Pentacolo for the Great Eastern Steeplechase again,” McKenna said.

“He’s a bit of a duffer on heavy tracks, so we’ll keep him for the early jumping races.”

Today’s Camperdown Cup will be run at 3.42pm.

Ah yes, what a champion.

Let me get this straight -

Didn't race in the 2011 season at all

In the 2010 Season he raced 8 times, and finished AT BEST fourth last out of 13 horses, and at best, DEAD LAST out of 6 horses.

Raced once only in 2009 (got second in that one, nice), and oh, wait, whats this? Did both tendons requiring a 87 week spell, and you want to put him in a jumps race????

Where are the stewards? Where is common sense??

What the hell is wrong with you people????

Disgusting - this horse has won in excess of $600,000.00 for his connections. Suffered 2 bowed tendons is 9 years old and they think it is acceptable to risk his life over jumps.

Please tell me at what point do these horses "earn" their retirement?

I will be very surprised if he lasts a season and trust me, if, God forbid, he should be killed, the RVL will have a lot to answer to

Maybe after his jumps career, if he survives, they can use him to drag horse drawn carriages around Melbourne, you know to earn his keep.

Goes to prove yet again that these horses are nothing but money to the majority of owners. This horse should not be risked over jumps. 2 bowed tendons are a recipe for disaster.

The RVL continue to prove that horse wefare is not a concern to them. Should this horse die I would hope the RSPCA will look at prosecuting all involved in this horses career. Greed, pure and simple
