COLERAINE'S popular cup meeting to be held tomorrow was yesterday declared a certain starter after the course emerged unscathed from this week's deluge.
Coleraine Racing Club secretary John Donnelly said the course's condition was so good, racing authorities should look at holding more meetings at the picturesque track.
"This is an incredible story, the Coleraine race course," he said.
"We raced here on Sunday and we got a crew in from Hamilton on Monday and they rolled the track and put it back together and after 25mm of rain I can't see it now racing any worse than a slow 7.
"I don't know why the powers that be don't have more races here in winter. They are spending millions on courses like Geelong (synthetic) when Coleraine is already here. Never once has it been in jeopardy. It is in a good spot, it is right up on the hill, it drains well and the wind helps dry it out."
Donnelly said the club was excited about the meeting, which while be moved by authorities from its popular day after the AFL grand final scheduling, had been upgraded to TAB status.
"It (the TAB status) might be a sign of giving Coleraine more meetings. I would doubt if there would be a track that could be raced on in the south-west this weekend. John Green said Warrnambool couldn't, Hamilton couldn't, Casterton couldn't because they race there next week."
Donnelly, who is also secretary of the Hamilton club, said he had the "best and worst" of winter tracks under his control.
He said he expected a good crowd tomorrow despite the switch from September to August for the cup and the oldest steeplechase in Australia.
"We are taking on the footy for the first time. We have good fields...you can only do your best."
He said the club had pre-sold 180-200 tickets for marquees which was down from the 300 it traditionally sold for the September meeting.
"We are happy with 200. We are just hoping we will get support and it looks like we will."
