Two south-west hockey players are bound for the national junior championships.
Warrnambool District Hockey Association's Mat Kennett and Portland Hockey Club member Caitlin Stafford have been named in Victorian teams to contest the championships in October.
They now face one and sometimes two training sessions each week for the next 10 before representing their state for the first time.
Mat, 15, who lives in Hamilton, but plays in senior and junior Warrnambool competitions, is excited about his elevation from the Victorian Country team.
"Over the past two years it's been a long-term goal," Mat said.
"It still was a surprise (to be picked) because you never know until your name is on the list."
He is one of 16 players in the team that will contest the under 15 championships in Launceston from October 2 to 9.
He said his parents were in for a long haul driving him the 630-kilometre round trip to Melbourne for training each Sunday and every second Wednesday night.
To ensure his parents are well prepared for the weekly drive, he also commutes to Warrnambool at least once a week to play with Buccaneers in senior and junior competitions.
"It's going to be good," he said of the championships.
"The team is pretty much the same under 13 Victorian team with a couple of extras that won the championships last year undefeated."
SUBS: under 13s is an unofficial national championships
Caitlin, 13, who plays with Portland in the Lower South East competition based in Mount Gambier, will represent Victoria in the under 13 age group at an invitation national tournament in Maryborough from October 4-9.
Her mother Andrea, Portland Hockey Club president, said Caitlin had caught the eye of South Australian selectors last year but was deemed too young.
She was pleased Caitlin had been picked for Victoria this year.
"Victoria is where we live," she said.
Caitlin, who was introduced to the game as a six year old, has been playing alongside her mother in Portland's division two women's competition as an inner or on a wing.
Andrea will have similarly long driving stints ahead of her with Caitlin required to attend training at the State Hockey Centre each Sunday.
