Teen Pirate wins senior best and fairest

08 Sep, 2009 05:00 AM
THE Wannon Rooms were host to such greatness as Batman, Superman and James Bond on Saturday night.

The Warrnambool District Hockey Association (WDHA) celebrated some of its own brightest stars with its annual dress-up best and fairest count.

WDHA media officer Tomas Tait said the `fictional character' dress code took the stress out of the night for the 130 attendees.

``It's a serious night and we want everyone to relax,'' he said.

``It was just to make it a bit more fun and everyone enjoyed themselves.''

Seventeen-year-ol d John Webster took out the open men's best and fairest title.

The Pirates player edged out runner-up Barracuda Warrick Greer by five votes for a winning tally of 21.

John also led the boy's under 17 count for most of the night, but fellow Pirate Hamish McDonald pipped him by three votes in the final rounds to win with 26 votes.

``The last rounds decided who won and who didn't in nearly all of them,'' Tait said.

``John had been leading most of the night. It's pretty impressive for a 17-year-old to win in the men's.''

The Vikings showed a strong presence on the night, having both the best and fairest player and runner-up in the under 17 division.

Sarah Manderson's chance of taking the top title was eclipsed when teammate Georgina Sambell claimed a three votes in the final round, closing the season with 28 votes to Sarah's 26.

Timboon Saints player Merryn Fyfe again took out the open women's best and fairest, leading the entire count for a win of 18 votes, followed by Buccaneer Michelle Martin on 16.

This is the third year Fyfe has won the best and fairest title.

In other hockey news, the under 17 preliminary final saw Vikings score a 1-0 win over Technique, while the Timboon Saints defeated the Pumas 3-0 in the women's final.

After trailing 1-0 at half-time, Buccaneers fought back to claim a 2-1 win over the Barracudas in the open men's hockey.

The grand final will be contested this weekend by the Barracudas and Vikings in under 17 play, while the women's final will see Buccaneers take on Timboon Saints.

The men's open final will be fought between the Pirates and Buccaneers.

The finals start 11:30am on Saturday at the Reid Oval complex.
