MINOR steps have been made towards a multipurpose synthetic surface in Portland.
The Glenelg Shire Council has received a $17,500 grant to conduct a feasibility study on the proposed outdoor facility.
Portland Hockey Club initiated the proposal but the surface is hoped to accommodate other sporting endeavours such as athletics, netball, tennis, soccer, touch football and futsal.
Shire recreation services officer Matt Block said high rainfall left most ovals too wet for activities in winter.
He said a more suitable hard surface also had other benefits.
"The synthetic surfaces are easier to manage reducing maintenance costs and labour which is truly advantageous with an ageing population," he said.
"These surfaces are also better suited for participation by older adults and those with disabilities, increasing accessibility and promoting active lifestyles for all.
"Another advantage is that a synthetic surface of this kind would require little irrigation, thereby reducing water use."
Hockey club spokeswoman Lynda Smith said the proposed development would attract major events to the town.
"A facility of this kind has the potential to allow a variety of sectors to hold regional, zone and state championships within our own shire and to attract top level coaching opportunities for juniors," she said.
A special committee for the Portland project will be formed in the coming months.
