Premiership extra sweet for hockey veteran

THE finals series at the Australian Veterans Hockey Championships in Melbourne was sweet for Warrnambool's Chris Thompson.

To gain a grand final berth his Victorian Country over 55 side had to overcome fierce rival Victorian Metropolitan.

It did just that with a 3-0 result.

"There's always that sense of 'us and them' and 'the city and the bush', so it was good to beat them," he explained.

The semi-final victory booked Vic Country an appointment with New South Wales in the deciding match.

"They're the Collingwood (of the competition)," Thompson, 56, said.

"If you're watching them play another team, you're always going for the other team."

Stellar defence, some sharp conversion and an overall strong team mentality ? which was evident throughout the carnival ? saw Vic Country enter the main break in the grand final with a 4-0 lead.

"That put them behind the eight-ball but to their credit, they came out hard in the second half and got the first goal," Thompson explained.

NSW's determination wasn't enough to snatch a win, with Vic Country grabbing the division two championship.

It marked Thompson's first premiership at the fortnight-long titles, which he has attended for the last eight years.

The half-back said Vic Country's undefeated tag was impressive.

"(Our) for-and-against result was probably the best for the whole competition, right through all the ages," he said. "We had 42 goals for and only three against. We're looking forward to next year, which is in Western Australia, in Bunbury."

Warrnambool's Tomas Tait also attended the titles.

He represented Vic Country's over 40 division 2 team, which finished third.
