Juniors contest state titles

02 Jul, 2009 05:00 AM
SOUTH-WEST juniors are pressing for Victorian team selection at the state junior hockey championships this week in Melbourne.

Quentin Barrett, of Warrnambool, Ashleigh Donehue, of Portland, Matthew Kennett and Samantha Bennett, of Hamilton, have been selected in country sides to contest the week-long titles.

The regional under-age combinations play against four Melbourne teams, with selectors then choosing state teams to contest the national junior titles in September.

Quentin, 15, is goalkeeper for the Country Cobras under 15 side and Matthew, 14, centre-forward with the under 14 side.

Samatha, 13, is full-back with the under 13 combination and Ashleigh joint vice-captain at under 15 level.

Matthew, Samantha and Quentin play domestic hockey in Warrnambool District Hockey Association competition.

The state junior titles run at the State Netball and Hockey Centre, Melbourne, until Sunday.
