Five sides compete for country honours

WARRNAMBOOL will send five junior teams to the Victorian Country Week Hockey Championships in Melbourne this weekend.

The under 15 and 17s girls and under 13, 15 and 17 boys have been training twice a week for more than a month and some of the line-ups will be boosted by players who took part in the senior men's and women's Victorian country titles.

Girls' coach Lyn Lanman said her two teams would compete in the under 15 and 17.

"Both have been promoted up to division one after the under 17s won last year and the under 15s finished runners-up," she said.

"It's challenging but this will really help the girls develop as players - it's a growing step."

Lanman said the under 17s had lost a few players from last year's strong team and would need to combine well to be competitive.

"The under 15s are a very steady team and quite even. They should go pretty well," she said.

Boys' coach Mark O'Sullivan said Warrnambool teams would compete in division two under 13s, 15s and 17s.

"The under 17s expect to go really well. They'll be disappointed if they don't win division two. The under 13s is always a bit unknown and the under 15s will be competitive with a lot of players going away for the first time," he said.
