SUPPOSEDLY perfect practice prevents poor performance - a theory Warrnambool District Hockey Association's (WDHA)
girls' sides will be able to test out this weekend.
The association is sending under 15 and under 17 female teams to the country championships in Melbourne.
Chris Thompson and Lyn Lanman will coach the 17s while Rachael Lenehan and Emily Lanman will look after the 15s.
Thompson said the female teams had completed weekly training sessions for five to six weeks.
"It's always difficult with girls because most don't tend to have the same training intensity as boys," he said.
"It's always a little frustrating because you want them to train at game tempo, then they're able to reproduce the skills when the pressure's on.
"I think for junior girls in particular, sport is more of a social thing than anything else."
Despite the more casual approach to training, Thompson believed both sides would be competitive at the annual titles.
"The under 17s are fairly well balanced," he said.
"I believe they've got the right mix of players.
"We're quietly confident they can make the final."
The under 15 side has been promoted to the top grade after a strong performance last year.
"They'll probably find the going a little bit tougher but they should still get a few wins," Thompson said.
The under 17s have a demanding schedule, taking on Sunraysia, Goulburn Valley, Ballarat, North Central, East Gippsland, Central Victoria and Glenelg.
"It's going to be a challenge," Thompson said.
"Lyn and myself are going to have to make sure we have plenty of rotations and have our fingers crossed we don't have any injuries."
The 15s will come up against Albury-Wodonga, East Gippsland, Goulburn Valley and Central Victoria.
WDHA is also sending under 17, under 15 and under 13 boys' sides to the two-day titles.
The 17s will be coached by Riley Cooper and John Webster while the 15s will be coached by Jamie Kennett.
Rosalie Hoy will take charge of the under 13s.
