A level playing field for the girls

23 Oct, 2009 08:57 AM
IT won't be all about the boys at this weekend's Warrnambool 13 and under mixed hockey carnival.

The inaugural carnival has a female focus, which organisers such as Monique Ferrier hope will prevent girls giving away the sport in their teenage years.

"Girls are probably less inclined to stay with hockey," Ferrier said.

"Sometimes getting them to play in the first place is hard. We want them to get involved and then to play annually."

At Sunday's tournament a rule will be enforced that states there must be at least four girls on the field at all times.

Ferrier said the girls weren't threatened by the boys.

"They all seem to enjoy playing together," she said. "Most clubs, apart from the metropolitan clubs, try to have mixed competitions."

Six teams will contest one grade on Sunday.

Warrnambool will field two teams while Bendigo, Geelong, Portland and a junior development club from Ballarat will field one each.

Each team will play the others once, with the side with the most points taking out the carnival.

The idea for the event came from the Warrnambool District Hockey Association (WDHA) junior committee.

"We just want to promote and encourage more junior hockey," Ferrier said.

The carnival will take place at the Albert Park hockey fields from 8am.
