PORTLAND-born trainer Robert Britton has ventured to Warrnambool to race the family greyhounds since the 1970s.
First it was in support of his father Allen, but now Britton is a top country conditioner in his own right.
The Lara-based trainer won the feature $5000-to-win WGOTBA Stayers Cup (650m) with Robert Andrew at Wannon Park on Saturday.
It marked the final meeting of the Warrnambool Greyhound Racing Club’s action-packed 2011-12 Seaside Carnival. Robert Andrew ($4.90) started second favourite behind Anakie runner Double Jeopardy ($2.50) — trained by Britton’s brother Jeffrey.
Jumping from box eight, Robert Andrew took his time to find the winning position.
“It was a very good field, but I gave him a good chance,” Britton said.
“We were reasonably confident that he could go well from outside if he got a clear run — and that’s what he did.”
While Robert Andrew, wearing the hot pink silk, eventually dashed across the line ahead of Yuroke visitor Midnight Eclipse ($9.90), it was not without some early hesitation.
“He missed the kick but managed to muster some pace,” Britton said.
“He was third down the back straight but then dropped back to fourth or fifth. He had some work to do.”
Midnight Eclipse, trained by Cameron Bahen, flew home and forced Robert Andrew to earn the cup.
“We actually thought it might have won,” Britton said of the second placegetter.
“It was a good surprise when we saw that we won by a head. I think it’s my first win in that race.” Robert Andrew posted a time of 38 seconds.
Allen’s charge Double Jeopardy finished seventh.
Britton said he was delighted to win for owner and media heavyweight Geoff Slattery.
Robert Andrew could now be sent to Perth on the back of the Stayers Cup triumph.
“He will pick up the odd country race,” Britton said.
“He may end up going to Perth.”
Britton was represented by handler Peter Riley at Wannon Park on Saturday.
