FEMALES flocked to the fairways for Warrnambool Lady Golfers Centenary Cup yesterday.
East Framlingham trio Maureen Bond, Betty Holscher and Bridgie Croft were the toast of the course after posting a nett score of 60 in the three ball best ball stoke event.
Despite wintry weather, the women shared the load in the 18-hole contest and narrowly collected the trophy by one stroke.
"It was a chilly start but we had great conditions and the course was really good," Holscher said.
Ninety women competed in the annual tournament, which began when Warrnambool Golf Club celebrated its centenary in 1995.
Clubs from Mount Gambier and the Grampians to Ballarat and Barwon Heads all entered teams into the south-west showdown.
Two of the three winning women went into the event with confidence after taking out club championship awards the day before.
Holscher and Croft top-scored in the East Framlingham A and B grade competitions on Tuesday.
Croft said it was Bond's turn to star yesterday.
"We're ecstatic, we're very excited," Croft said.
"Everything was spot on."
While it was the trio's first outing as team, Bond said the group combined from the opening tee-off.
But the eventual victors had to wait for the presentations to learn the result.
"It was a great day," Bond said.
"In this competition it's always very hard to tell if you
have a good score.
"Even at the end you don't know who won."
Bond, Holscher and Croft edged out Warrnambool team Rosemary Walters, Jenny Buzolich and Pam Brebner - who finished on nett 61.
Many of the golfers who contested yesterday's cup will head to Terang on Monday for the East-West pennant play-off.
