Leishman's overcomes bogies for top-20 finish

07 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
WARRNAMBOOL’S Marc Leishman overcame a horror start yesterday to post a lucrative top-20 finish in the US PGA Tour event in Arizona.

The 28-year-old had a roller-coaster final round at the Phoenix Open in Scottsdale, dropping four shots in the first five holes. But he eventually finished in a tie for 19th at seven under par, eight shots behind winner American Kyle Stanley.

Leishman, who pocketed $US68,842.85, picked up valuable points for the season-ending tour play-off series after surging on the back nine.

After four bogeys in the opening five holes, Leishman birdied the sixth but dropped it straight away with bogey on the seventh. He then rallied with birdies at the 10th, 13th, 14th and 16th holes as he climbed back up the leaderboard, signing for an even par final round of 71.

Rod Pampling was the highest-placed Australian, shooting a final round 67 to finish at eight-under, one ahead of compatriots Greg Chalmers and Leishman.

Stanley’s $US1 million win capped an emotional comeback. He erased an eight-shot deficit to claim victory a week after a last-round collapse at Torrey Pines.

Stanley was brought to tears at Torrey after a triple-bogey at the final hole dropped him into a play-off that he lost.

But yesterday he was in a position to strike as Spencer Levin suffered a similar collapse — surrendering a six-shot overnight lead. Stanley capped a bogey-free 65 with a four-foot par putt and finished with a 15-under total of 269.
