HEATHCOTE golfer Britney Mueck soared to the top of the girl's leaderboard after posting two eagles on day one of the junior open championship in Warrnambool yesterday.
She mastered the first (par five) and fourth (par four) holes in the first chapter of the 36-hole stroke event - which has attracted about 100 young players from across Victoria and Tasmania.
Teeing-off with a handicap of three, the Victorian junior team member finished on gross 76 with a net score of 73.
Britney is just one shot ahead of Sunshine's Stephanie Robinson on 77-3-74 - who is also a state team golfer.
Despite the impressive start, the early leader found faults in her opening round.
"It was disappointing," Britney said.
"I played the easy holes badly when I (originally) expected to get a good score."
Britney is following in the footsteps of brother Kris, who won the boy's competition two years ago.
Last year the siblings took out their respective open sections at the Kooringal Golf Club's annual 36-hole tournament.
In her second appearance at Warrnambool golf course, Britney made her two eagles sound effortless.
"On the first hole I put the second shot to the back of the green and putted it in," she said.
"On the fourth I had a good drive then I chipped it in."
The tricky par-five tenth hole troubled Britney the most as she posted a bogey.
After a promising 18-holes, she has a plan for today's final round.
"I've been hitting my drives well," she said.
"I don't want to do so badly on the easy holes and I can't expect to get eagles again."
In the boys’ competition, Dylan Morrison of Sanctuary Lakes is leading the open and under 18 sections after shooting a 70 yesterday.
Warrnambool’s Lachie Peters is well placed in the under 18 section with a net score of 70 (99-29-70).
Cobden’s Matt Hinkley is the handicap (18-20 years) leader with 71 off scratch with Hamilton’s Jarrod Sharrock holding a net score of 71 (80-9-71).
In the under 15 scratch event, Nelson Williams of Port Fairy is leading (81-7-74) and the under 15 handicap sees Kurtis Lynch of Neangar Park out in front (82-15-67).
In the non-handicap nine holes event, 15-year-old Jake Burgess fired a round of 50 and in the nine holes modified 11-year-old Ben Williams shot a 44.
